Depression
The condition of experiencing low feelings is commonly called Depression. It is the name given given to feeling sad, let down, ‘blue’, disappointed or downhearted. The bad feelings linger and won’t go away. They’re there a lot of the time, even when we don’t know why. Some people feel constantly sad and downhearted. No matter what happens, they just can’t cheer up or feel positive about anything. Even when they want to feel happy, they can’t. In fact, depression affects about one person in five at some time in their life.
Depression caused by chemical imbalance is a physical, not a mental condition. This needs an intervention from a GP in the first instance. Counselling can still help, even if you are taking medication. Depression that is not chemically caused is usually sadness at unfortunate and distressing life events. In fact, it is something that everyone experiences at some time. It doesn’t mean you have a mental illness. You just need help to manage your feelings and time to recover.
